With a career record of 719-311-1 (.698), McDonnell owns the third-highest winning percentage among active Division I coaches. Under McDonnell’s guidance, Louisville has made five College World Series appearances (2007, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019), reached nine Super Regionals, and captured 10 regular-season conference championships. The Cardinals have also seen remarkable individual success, with 41 All-Americans, seven conference Pitchers of the Year, and four conference Players of the Year emerging under his leadership. McDonnell has helped produce 103 MLB Draft picks, including 26 players who reached the Major Leagues and nine first-round selections. Among these standout players is 2017 National Player of the Year Brendan McKay. In addition to his work at Louisville, McDonnell has contributed on the international stage, managing the USA Collegiate National Team in 2019 and serving as an assistant coach in 2009. Before his time at Louisville, he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Ole Miss, helping the Rebels reach three Super Regionals. McDonnell’s playing career at The Citadel included a trip to the 1990 College World Series, and he still holds program records for career walks and is fourth in stolen bases.
