The American Baseball Coaches Association mourns the passing of Hall of Fame coach, past ABCA President, and longtime Board Member Robert M. “Bob” Hannah, who passed away this week.
Hannah was the longest-tenured member in ABCA history, holding 64 consecutive years of membership dating back to 1962. His lifelong commitment to the Association and to the game of baseball left a lasting impact on generations of coaches and players across the country.
One of the most respected and successful coaches in collegiate baseball history, Hannah spent 35 seasons as head baseball coach at the University of Delaware from 1965 to 2000, compiling a remarkable career record of 1,053-463-6 (.694). He won more games than any coach in any sport in University of Delaware history and ranked among the top 25 winningest coaches in college baseball history at the time of his retirement.
Under Hannah’s leadership, the Blue Hens made 12 NCAA Regional appearances, captured 22 conference titles, and reached the College World Series in 1970, the only CWS appearance in program history. His teams produced just two losing seasons over 35 years and consistently ranked among the nation’s best, including five straight 40-win seasons from 1994 to 1998 and 29 seasons with 20 or more wins.
A five-time NCAA District Coach of the Year and a multiple-time conference Coach of the Year, Hannah coached dozens of standout players, including more than 20 All-Americans and over 30 Major League Baseball Draft selections. His influence extended well beyond wins and losses, shaping countless student-athletes through leadership, discipline, and integrity.
Hannah’s impact on the game was recognized with numerous honors, including induction into the ABCA Hall of Fame in 1991. He was also a charter member of the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame, a member of the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame, and had the University of Delaware baseball stadium named in his honor. In addition to his coaching career, he served as Chairman of the University of Delaware Department of Physical Education for several years.
Within the ABCA, Hannah’s service was equally significant. He served as ABCA President in 1988 and remained actively involved with the Association for decades, including service on the ABCA Board of Directors. His leadership and unwavering support of the coaching profession made him a respected voice within the Association and a mentor to many.
Bob Hannah’s legacy is defined by excellence, longevity, and service to the game he loved. The ABCA extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, former players, and the University of Delaware baseball community. His impact on college baseball and on the ABCA will be felt for generations to come.
