Jack Coffey served as the head coach at Fordham University from 1909-58. From 1926-58, Coffey would also serve as Graduate Manager of Athletics.
While Coffey oversaw athletics at Fordham, the university became a national sports powerhouse. The baseball team won five Eastern Collegiate Conference championships and 14 Metropolitan Conference titles. In 47 seasons, Coffey would compile a career record of 1160-482-13 (.705). At least 23 of his former players would make it to the major leagues.
Coffey has received multiple awards including a citation for "long and meritorious service to sports" from the Sports Broadcasters Association and the Eastern College Athletic Conference's annual James Lynch Memorial Award for outstanding service.
In 1954, Fordham University renamed its baseball field Jack Coffey Field.
In his honor, the John F. Coffey Award is given each year to the Fordham varsity athlete who achieves the highest academic standing.
Coffey is a member of the Fordham Hall of Fame (1970), the defunct Collegiate Baseball Hall of Fame (1954) and the Helms Foundation Collegiate Baseball Hall of Fame (1954).
