Earl Lorden, for whom UMass's baseball field is named, coached the Minutemen from 1948-66. He compiled a career record of 193-147-3 during his tenure and led the 1954 team to the District I title and a berth in the College World Series. In 1970, Lorden was elected to the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and in 1971, the University dedicated the baseball field in his honor. Lorden sent 10 players on to play in professional baseball, and not only coached baseball but was an assistant football coach as well. Lorden also taught physical education classes at the University. Lorden was inducted into the UMass Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982.
