Sam Piraro forged a distinguished coaching career that spanned high school, junior college, and NCAA Division I baseball, leaving an enduring legacy at every level.
A native of San José, Piraro had strong ties to the Spartans long before taking the helm at San José State University. He played as an infielder on the 1971 and 1972 San José State teams and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SJSU. His coaching career began in 1974 as a graduate assistant and junior varsity coach at San José State, laying the foundation for his future success.
In 1980, Piraro became the first head coach of the newly established baseball program at Mission College, serving in that role through 1986. Over seven seasons in Santa Clara, he compiled a 190-70-3 record while leading the Saints to two California Community College state championships in 1981 and 1983 and capturing five Coast Conference titles.
In 1987, Piraro took over the San José State program, where he would define his legacy at the NCAA Division I level. Over two tenures spanning 1987-2002 and 2004-2012, he transformed the Spartans into a nationally respected program. The pinnacle of his career came in 2000 when he guided San José State to its first-ever College World Series appearance. Under his leadership, the Spartans earned two NCAA Tournament berths, and Piraro was recognized with four Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. His time with the program culminated with him becoming the winningest coach in San José State history, posting an 806-632-6 record and contributing to an overall collegiate career mark of 996-702-9 (.583).
During his years at San José State, more than 60 of his former players were drafted into professional baseball. His achievements have been recognized with multiple honors, including induction into the San José Sports Hall of Fame in 2022, the San José State Baseball Legends in 2024, and recognition by both the Italian Heritage Hall of Fame and the Italian American Hall of Fame.
He returned to Mission College as an assistant coach from 2013 to 2014, continuing to contribute to the program he helped build. His accomplishments earned him recognition in 1996 as the second-youngest coach ever inducted into the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He was further honored in 2021 as a member of the inaugural class of the Mission College Athletics Hall of Fame.
After concluding his collegiate coaching career, Piraro returned to the high school ranks, serving as head coach at Willow Glen High School from 2015 to 2018.
A 50-year Lifetime Member of the American Baseball Coaches Association, Piraro remains one of California’s most respected and celebrated figures in baseball, having left a lasting imprint on countless players, fellow coaches, and the broader baseball community. He continues to contribute coaching articles to the ABCA's Inside Pitch Magazine on a regular basis.
