Pat Casey is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential coaches in college baseball history. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he transformed Oregon State University into a national powerhouse while leaving a lasting mark on the sport.
Casey began his head coaching career at George Fox University in Oregon, serving from 1988 to 1994. During his seven seasons with the Bruins, he compiled a 171-113-1 (.600) record, laying the foundation for a career defined by excellence and success. In 1995, he accepted the head coaching position at Oregon State, where his vision and leadership would elevate the Beavers to unprecedented heights. Over 24 seasons in Corvallis, Casey amassed a 900-458-6 (.660) record, becoming the winningest coach in any sport in Oregon State history and finishing with a career record of 1,071-571-7 (.649).
Under Casey’s guidance, Oregon State became a perennial national contender. The Beavers made six College World Series appearances and captured three national titles, including consecutive championships in 2006 and 2007. Oregon State also became the only program to win six elimination games in Omaha, achieving the feat in 2006 and 2018. In total, the Beavers made 13 postseason appearances under Casey, accounting for 64 of the program’s 69 all-time victories.
Beyond team success, Casey developed 116 Major League Baseball draft picks, including eight first-round selections, and mentored 21 players who advanced to the major leagues. His guidance helped produce 24 All-Americans, numerous Freshman All-Americans, and several Olympians and Team USA and Team Canada representatives. Oregon State student-athletes flourished academically as well, with 43 Pac-12 All-Academic selections in the last three seasons of his tenure and three consecutive ABCA Team Academic Excellence Awards.
Casey’s achievements earned him national recognition and numerous coaching honors. He was named National Coach of the Year three times by the American Baseball Coaches Association and five times overall. He also received Pac-10/Pac-12 Coach of the Year accolades five times and was recognized as College Baseball Coach of the Decade for the 2000s by Baseball America. In 2024, his career accomplishments were further celebrated with induction into both the College Baseball Hall of Fame and the Oregon State Athletics Hall of Fame.
Casey retired in 2018 following Oregon State’s third national championship, his 900th win coming in the final game against Arkansas. In his final two seasons, he guided the Beavers to a 111-18-1 record, including a remarkable 57-6 mark at home, one of the highest winning percentages in conference history. Beyond statistics and titles, Casey is celebrated for his mentorship, leadership, and lasting influence on players, colleagues, and the collegiate baseball landscape.
