Ray Korn spent his coaching career at every level of baseball. He coached for 34 years in the New Jersey high school ranks, amassing an overall record of 653-236. During that same time, Korn served as pitching coach at the collegiate and professional levels as well as for several Team USA squads. Beginning in 2010, Korn has spent the last 11 seasons as a volunteer pitching coach for Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Korn began his coaching career in 1970 at St. Patrick's High School following his graduation from St. Leo University in Florida. He coached the Celtics for four years and led the team to its first-ever Parochial State Championship in his final year at the school in 1973.
After leaving St. Patrick's, Korn returned to his alma mater, Roselle Catholic High School, where he coached from 1974-79. Korn led the team to its first and only state championship in before departing to serve as head coach and Athletic Director at Elizabeth High School from 1979-2009.
During his tenure at Elizabeth High School, Korn posted a record of 541-206 while building a powerhouse program. Elizabeth High School was ranked No. 1 for eight weeks in 1990 and cracked the top 25 on USA Today's high school baseball rankings nine times under Korn's guidance. The program was rated New Jersey's No. 1 baseball program of the 1980's by the Newark Star Ledger. Korn had 15 players drafted by Major League teams and more than 70 players selected to All-State teams.
Korn retired in 2009 as the all-time wins leader in Union County history and fourth on the New Jersey all-time wins list. Korn was a four-time New Jersey Coach of the Year and three-time ABCA District Coach of the Year.
In addition to his accomplishments at the high school level, Korn was also the pitching coach at Seton Hall from 1976-80. He also coached and scouted in the professional ranks with the Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs organizations.
At the international level, Korn was pitching coach for the USA Jr. National Team that won a bronze medal in Cuba at the World Championship in 1990 and was pitching coach for the USA Pan-Am Cup Team that took home a silver medal in Panama City in 2000. He also served as pitching coach for the USA Women's Baseball Team that competed in the Women's World Cup in Taiwan in 2006.
Since 2010, Korn has served as volunteer assistant coach at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, N.C. Korn has been a clinician several times at the ABCA Convention and has spoken before baseball coaches associations in several states as well as in Europe.
Korn is a member of the St. Leo University, New Jersey Athletic and Union County Baseball Halls of Fame. He has been recognized with the Robert F. Kanaby Award for Outstanding Lifetime Service to the State of New Jersey as well as the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Service Award. In addition, Korn was recently honored by his alma mater with the Roselle Catholic "You Made a Difference" Award.
During his illustrious career, Korn coached more than 20 Major Leaguers, including Tony Clark, Darryl Strawberry and Bob Milacki.
