Jack Dunn was the gold standard in Oregon high school and college baseball for 39 years. He retired in 1994 after 20 straight winning seasons at Portland State University with a record of 630 wins against 439 losses. PSU won conference championships in both the North Pacific League and PAC-10 Northern Division, placing in the top half of the PAC-10 North eight times in 11 years despite competing against better-funded schools such as Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, and Gonzaga. His 1977 club advanced to the NCAA Regional at Arizona State and established the state collegiate record of 39 wins in 1984 and 1986.
His two high school programs, Cleveland and Wilson, were the class of the Portland City League for 19 years, and his American Legion summer teams were even better. He was selected State of Oregon Coach of the Year in 1973 after his team placed third in the American Legion World Series. During one four and a half year period, Dunn's Legion team did not lose a conference game.
Thirty-five of Dunn's players advanced to professional baseball, including two-time National League Most Valuable Player Dale Murphy and major league manager Tom Trebelhorn.
Dunn is a member of the State of Oregon Hall of Fame, the Oregon High School Coaches Hall of Fame, the Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame, Cleveland High School Hall of Fame, and the Portland State University Hall of Fame. He also received the Distinguished Career Award from The Oregonian, the state's major newspaper.
Jack Dunn was a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association's Coaching and Teaching Aids Committee for 10 years and was also NCAA District 7 Representative. He chaired the committee that organized the Oregon State High School Baseball CoachesAssociation, served as its President, and directed numerous baseball clinics for its membership.
