Russ Frazier's coaching career began in 1959 at Louisburg College, the oldest private junior college in the nation. In 40 seasons, he accumulated 1034 wins and 390 losses for a .726 winning percentage. In that span he took his Hurricanes to nine NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., placing fifth twice and third once. His Hurricanes won 20 Conference Championships, 13 Regional Championships and nine District Championships.
Twelve of his players played Major League Baseball and more than 75 have signed pro contracts. Russ was Region Coach of the Year 13 times, District Coach of the Year nine times, Conference Coach of the Year 21 times and inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 1987.
He was the assistant coach for the USA Team that won the World Amateur Games in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1974; assistant Coach of the USA South Team that won the gold medal in Houston, Texas in 1985; and head coach of the USA Junior Olympic Team that won the silver medal in Windsor, Canada in 1978.
In North Carolina, he is one of nine people to win both the Will Wynne Award and the Governor's Award given by the Raleigh Hot Stove League. He was selected, by the Raleigh News and Observer Newspaper, as "Tar Heel of the Week" in 1982. He was selected, along with coaches Wayne Graham, Will Griffin and Demie Mainieri, as a member of the Baseball News 20th Century National Junior College All-Star Team in 2000.
In 1987 the Louisburg College trustees surprised and honored Coach Frazier by naming their field Frazier Field. Russ Frazier is a lifetime member of both the ABCA and the NJCAA. He is also a member of the North Carolina, NJCAA and Louisburg Halls of Fame.
