In 1982, Al Endriss came to the College of Marin (Calif). During his coaching career there, he led his Mariners to 465 victories and transferred 38 athletes to Division I schools and numerous others to Division II schools. Endriss retired from Marin in 1997.
Endriss began his sports career at St. Elizabeth's high school in Oakland, California where he played basketball, baseball, and football. From there he went to St. Mary's College and continued with his three-sport career.
In 1948 he began his professional sports career playing baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers farm league system. After four seasons of baseball, Endriss switched to football, signing a contract with the San Francisco 49ers as a back up defensive end in 1952. After a season with the Niners, Endriss went to play in the Canadian Football League for the Calgary Stampeders. Endriss was set to return to Calgary in 1954 when he received a call from the principal at St. Elizabeth's, his alma mater. The school was in need of a football coach and he was their first choice.
Endriss decided to take the coaching job and continued coaching high school football and baseball for the next 25 years, with the bulk of that time spent coaching baseball at Redwood High School. During his tenure at Redwood, he was voted the National High School Baseball Coach of the Year in 1974 and led the Giants to a National High School Championship in 1976.
Endriss has been inducted into the SFSU Hall of Fame and the Marin Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame.
