A Cal State University Northridge Hall of Famer, Robert Hiegert coached the Matadors for 18 seasons from 1967-1984, leading the program to a pair of NCAA National Championships in 1970 and 1984.
In the CSUN record books, Hiegert's accomplishments are staggering. His 586 wins are the most by any coach in program history. In his 18 seasons, the Matador won eight California Collegiate Athletics Association championships along with the two national titles.
Hiegert also earned NCAA Division II Coach of the Year honors in his final season (1984), and he received District VIII Coach of the Year honors on five separate occasions. Overall, Hiegert coached 24 Major League draftees, and coached the Matadors to a record of 586-412-8 (.586), including 245 conference wins.
Hiegert, who oversaw the program's transition from a club sport to a collegiate sport, also served as the CSUN Athletic Director from 1977-1995. He was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.
