University of Georgia
Inducted in 1987

Jim Whatley was the head baseball coach at the University of Georgia from 1950-75. Whatley posted a 25-year record of 336-327-3 (.505) as Georgia's baseball coach before retiring following the 1975 season. In his final season, he took a last place team from 1974 and won the SEC Eastern Division championship in '75. Whatley won two SEC titles at Georgia (1953, '54) and was runner-up twice (1955, '75). A former president of the ABCA (1964), Whatley was named assistant football coach and head baseball and basketball coach in 1949, after serving three years as assistant football and head basketball coach at Ole Miss (1946-49). A graduate of Alabama, Whatley is still regarded by many as the Crimson Tide's greatest all-around athlete after earning 10 varsity letters in football, baseball, basketball, and track. He was a member of Alabama's 1934 national championship football team and played on six SEC title teams (one basketball, two football, three baseball). He was an All-SEC tackle in 1934 and All-SEC basketball center in 1935 and '36 and was a standout first baseman as well.
